Un paio di giorni fa è stato il 20esimo compleanno del primo dispositivo che potremmo definire smartphone. Il suo nome è IBM Simon Personal Communicator e ovviamente, al momento della sua commercializzazione (16 Agosto 1994), non era chiamato smartphone (il termine non esisteva neanche).
Le vendite di questo dispositivo sono state abbastanza buone (per quei tempi), visto che le unità vendute si aggirano attorno alle 50.000. Tale “smartphone” è stato commercializzato solamente in USA ed era capace di agganciarsi solamente alle bande di frequenza di 15 stati.
Come è facile pensare, questo dispositivo era particolarmente in voga tra i businessman, visto che offriva la possibilità di visualizzare il calendario, le e-mail e di connettersi ai fax. Le dimensioni non erano però proprio da peso piuma. Il suo peso è pari a circa 500 grammi, più di un iPad Air.
Il prezzo di vendita era molto alto però, addirittura più alto degli smartphone top di gamma attuali. Per portarselo a casa, occorrevano 899 dollari che, a causa dell’inflazione che è dilagata in questo periodo, equivalgono a circa 1400 dollari. Quasi ci viene da ridere se pensiamo il progresso tecnologico che c’è stato in soli 20 anni. Siamo passati da dispositivi molto ingombranti a smartphone di appena 6 millimetri di spessore.
